There has been publication by some health professionals and organisations promoting the diagnosis of ‘Hypermobility Spectrums Disorders’ also known as ‘HSD’ recently. They are proposed four categories focusing on symptomatic hypermobility symptoms.
Generalised Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
Peripheral Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
Localised Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
Historical Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
The distinction between hEDS and HSD is not clear due to lack of explanation, at this stage it is purely an academic theory, focusing on the Beighton Scale and requiring much further scientific research.
It is important that Clinicians do not discount the care of and treat patients with an 'HSD' diagnosis as having Hypermobile type Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, both conditions are symptomatic without a currently known genetic defect; and also take into account that like other types of EDS they also experience and are at risk of other multi-morbidities.
